Tips For Eating At A Mexican Restaurant When You're Picky

Joseph Mendoza

You might know people who will eat just about any food item in front of them, but you might not be the same way. If you are a picky eater who is a bit more specific about what you will and will not eat, you should know that you are not alone. Because you might be a picky eater, you might be nervous about trying new and different restaurants. However, a Mexican restaurant, in particular, can actually be a great choice for picky eaters, and many picky eaters are able to find dishes that they love at these restaurants. You will have a great dining experience if you follow these tips.

Read the Menu Carefully

It's easy to get overwhelmed by the menu at a Mexican restaurant, especially if you can't read Spanish and if you don't have a lot of experience with ordering food from these types of restaurants. However, most of the menus at these restaurants actually include descriptions underneath each dish's name that tells you more about what the dish is and what it includes. If possible, consider looking up the restaurant's menu online before you visit. Doing so gives you more time to look over the menu and find dishes that you might be interested in trying.

Order Fajitas

For many people, ordering fajitas is a great idea because it allows them to pick and choose what they want to eat. In many cases, Mexican restaurants serve various types of fajitas — such as chicken, steak, shrimp, or a mixed dish that includes a mixture of two or more of these options — without actually stuffing the tortillas for their customers. Instead, they send a platter to the table that has a mixture of meat or seafood and vegetables. You might also be served rice, beans, vegetables, and other things on the side. If being served in this way appeals to you, you can simply pick which items you want to add to your tortillas and which ones you don't.

Don't Be Afraid to Make Substitutions

If there are certain ingredients that you don't find palatable, you shouldn't be afraid to ask for substitutions. After all, many Mexican restaurants are more than willing to customize their dishes for their customers, since these dishes are often easily customizable. Therefore, if you like everything that you see listed for a menu item except for one or two ingredients, be sure to let your server know, and they might just be able to accommodate your preferences.
